About Schwinn
The Schwinn brand has a rich heritage, rooted in a bicycle company founded in the late 1800s. In 1965, the brand brought bicycle technology indoors and introduced the Deluxe Exerciser exercise bike.
Today, Schwinn offers a full range of cardio solutions, fitness apps, and entertainment options. You can buy quality and affordable treadmills, ellipticals, and exercise bikes.
You can contact Schwinn’s customer care team by phone. Their working hours are Monday to Friday, 6 AM to 5 PM PDT.
Who is the Schwinn 411 Elliptical For?
Do you want to get fit from home? Are you a beginner? Do you need a space and budget-saving elliptical? If yes, the Schwinn 411 elliptical is for you.
With its relatively small footprint, the machine can be suitable for home gyms with limited space. The machine weighs around 100 lbs, so ensure you assemble it in the room you intend to use it in.
The 411 is the entry-level elliptical, thus ideal for beginners and individuals looking to get back into fitness. You can start with a manual program and adjust the resistance per your fitness level. As you improve, you can challenge yourself with the built-in workout programs.
Cost-wise as well, the 411 is the most affordable product on Schwinn’s elliptical range.
If you are at an advanced fitness level, look at other elliptical models by Schwinn. For example, the newest Schwinn release 490 with incline options and 25 resistance levels would be better suited.
5 Important Factors we Tested the Product on
We tested the elliptical in-house to understand its assembly and usability process. Two individuals from our team, one with a height of 5’5” and another with a height of 6’0”, tested the elliptical to see how the stride length performs.
Here is how the 411 elliptical fared.
1. Build
If space is an issue for you, the 411 elliptical is what you need. It has a relatively small footprint, with the assembled machine dimensions being 53.8 x 24 x 62.5 inches and the weight being 100 lbs.
The 411 is equipped with a high-speed, high inertia perimeters weighted flywheel, which is a staple with Schwinn ellipticals. This helps you easily switch between resistance levels during your workout.
It has a set of moving and fixed handlebars. If you want to get a full-body workout, use the moving handlebars. Or if you need support to stay upright on the machine, the fixed handlebars are helpful.
The elliptical has cushioned footplates with plenty of room to place your feet at your preferred angle. The cushioning helps with shock absorption and reduces stress on the joints.
The 411 has other accessories like a water bottle holder, media shelf, and transport wheels.
The elliptical lacks in the console department, but it is expected, considering it is an entry-level model. It has a 5.5-inch LCD for a display. It shows details like distance, time, and calories. It has buttons to start, choose, and pause/stop workout programs and adjust resistance levels.
2. Assembly
The elliptical can take about 2 hours to assemble. It would be best to have an extra pair of hands helping you with assembly. Some parts may be difficult to lift and attach.
The assembly manual is descriptive and clear. You get a labeled list of parts and tools. The instructions include illustrations. So, overall, you should be able to assemble the elliptical on your own.
But if you are not mechanically inclined, it would be best to get the elliptical assembled.
Schwinn offers an in-house assembly service. The technicians will move the package to your room of choice. They will assemble the elliptical and then move the boxes to your refuse area.
3. Usability
Using the Schwinn 411 elliptical is pretty straightforward. Hold the fixed handlebars and mount the elliptical by stepping on the footplate that is the lowest and closest to you.
If the elliptical is connected to a power source, the display should turn on when you push any button on the console. You can choose from the manual, interval, or challenge buttons under the programs section to get started.
I recommend you start with lower resistance levels and then switch to higher levels as your fitness level improves. You have up to 16 resistance levels to choose from. Explore the built-in workout programs if you want to add variety to your cardio session.
At any given point, the elliptical can only show you data for one user.
4. Workout Options
The Schwinn 411 includes 13 workout programs. These programs are divided into manual, interval, and challenge categories.
The manual mode starts the quick start program. The default resistance is set to 4. You can use the up and down resistance buttons to customize the level.
The interval mode starts a HIIT program wherein the default and minimum workout time is 12 minutes. The workout is divided into sprint and recovery periods. The sprint period lasts for 30 seconds, and you get more resistance. The recovery period lasts for 90 seconds, and you get less resistance.
In the challenge mode, the programs are a combination of different resistance and workout levels. For example, the workouts offered are:
- Rolling Hills
- Ride in the Park
- Easy Tour
- Pike’s Peak
- Pyramids
- Stream Crossing
- Mount Hood and more
Lastly, you have a heart rate control program, wherein you select a base heart rate for your program. The elliptical will read the heart rate and adjust the resistance to keep it near the base rate value.
5. Performance
The 411 elliptical has a sturdy construction. It can support up to 300 lbs of maximum user weight. This is pretty good compared to other entry-level ellipticals in the market.
Users under the 5’8” height mark will get a full range of motion on the elliptical. Our 5’5” tester found the elliptical to be smooth and quiet. It was easy to switch between resistance levels.
Our 6’0” tester found the elliptical to be a bit limiting. With the 18-inch stride length, the elliptical can start feeling like a stepper for taller individuals.
The built-in workout programs are a nice addition. But overall, I would say the elliptical, with its resistance levels and programs, is best suited for beginners.
A feature I want to point out is that the time display values reset after a point. For example, in the manual mode, if you exercise for about 100 minutes, the time will reset after 99 minutes and 59 seconds.
It is the same case with interval programs. As mentioned above, the minimum duration of the HIIT workout is 12 minutes. You can increase the workout duration by 12 minutes. But after every 12-minute session, the display will reset.
So, you need to be mindful of the display reset and track your exercise sessions accordingly.
What Sets the Schwinn 411 Elliptical Apart from its Competitors?
On the console, you will find a Bluetooth button. You can use it to connect to fitness apps for tracking or the heart rate chest strap. You must buy the chest strap separately.
Push and release the Bluetooth button quickly to search for a heart rate chest strap. Push the button and hold it down for three seconds to search for a Bluetooth-enabled device.
The fixed handlebars also have contact heart rate sensors built-in. These readings, though, are an approximation and should be taken only as a reference.
Another distinguishing feature of the 411 elliptical is that it is compatible with the Explore the World app. You can exercise on your elliptical while exploring routes through 19 different locations.
Should You Purchase the Schwinn 411 Elliptical?
If space and budget are a priority, consider buying the Schwinn 411 elliptical. It is a quality elliptical that can support a maximum user weight of 300 lbs.
You can add variety to your workout sessions with different resistance levels and built-in programs. 2 people can assemble the machine in about a couple of hours.
It has a comparatively shorter stride length, which may not be ideal for taller users.
